To calculate the required sling length for a desired sling angle, you can use the following method:

  1. Determine the desired sling angle: The sling angle refers to the angle formed between the sling leg and the horizontal plane. This angle is typically measured at the attachment points of the sling to the load. It is important to specify the desired sling angle based on the lifting configuration and load stability requirements.

  2. Measure the vertical distance between the attachment points: Take measurements to determine the vertical distance between the attachment points where the sling will be connected to the load. This distance is the vertical height that needs to be lifted or supported.

  3. Calculate the sling length: To calculate the required sling length, you can use the following formula: Sling Length = Vertical Distance / Sin(Sling Angle) In this formula, the sling angle is expressed in radians. Therefore, if you are working with degrees, you need to convert the angle to radians before using it in the calculation. The sine function (Sin) is used to determine the ratio of the vertical distance to the sling length.

  4. Consider the additional length for angles less than 30 degrees: For sling angles less than 30 degrees, it is recommended to add an additional length to compensate for the reduced capacity and increased stress on the sling. This additional length is typically 1.5 times the vertical distance. So, the adjusted sling length would be: Adjusted Sling Length = Sling Length + 1.5 * Vertical Distance

It is important to note that these calculations provide an approximate sling length based on idealized conditions. Factors such as load weight, load distribution, sling type, and sling angle tolerance should be considered to ensure safe and efficient lifting operations. Additionally, consulting industry standards and regulations is crucial for accurate and compliant sling length calculations.

By following this method and considering the necessary adjustments, you can calculate the required sling length to achieve the desired sling angle and ensure proper load support during lifting operations.
